Juror # Minority

A Puerto Rican juror says, "Zim got away with murder." Puerto Rico is populated with Puerto Ricans, mostly. Mostly in the Puerto Rican culture they do not believe in self-defense as an excuse for killing a human.  “Thou Shalt Not Kill” rules the culture.  Our soldiers are murderers by that standard.  Thank our Constitution that she performed her American duty as a juror based on law and agrees this trial should never have been tried.

Is he innocent? No. Neither one of them is innocent. Zim is not guilty. There's a difference.

We're talking about two young people out late looking for a fight. One was packing heat, one was packing Skittles. Had either one been decent or patient, none of this happens.

Guilty of what? Protecting his neighborhood? There is no evidence Zim wasn't "patient". He was observing. He was hunting. Turns out the innocent Mr. Martin picked the wrong day to don his thug attitude and jump the creepy ass cracker who was observing him. It's too bad that we can't really speak frankly about Mr. Martin, his history of fighting, his suspension from school for drug use, his affinity for guns and his profiling of Zim as a pervert.

Zim saw a dude who matched the description of some guys who pulled a home invasion while a white woman was hiding with her baby upstairs. Yup, that's profiling and I bet you'd do it to if such an invasion occurred in your neighborhood.

And Zim did exactly what he was supposed to. He observed, he didn't attack. He didn't even call out to Martin. Unless a witness can offer something to the contrary, as an American, Zim deserves the benefit of the doubt. His story holds up. The rest is hype, and bigotry ...

Sorry ...

He WASN'T hunting ... bad typo that ...

BTW,

He IS innocent until proven otherwise. The Bill of Rights doesn't dictate we are "not guilty" until proven guilty. There really is no difference. The latter simply reads poorly. Innocent and not guilty are one in the same.

Yes even OJ is innocent. We all "know" he did it. But it is very unAmerican of us to do this. It's this notion of "not guilty" vs. "innocent" that fuels media frenzies that produce an "accused is guilty" culture ...

We need a time out!

Of course there was evidence he wasn't patient. The 911 tape clearly shows Zim went into the conflict with aggressive bias ... not based on race, but on the suspicion an unidentifiable trespassing figure was a potential threat, which he turned out to be.

Fact is, we don't know what happened. We don't know if Zim offered him a ride or made a gay pass at Mart (Mr. Martin? really?).

We don't know if he charged him and shouted, or offered an olive branch. Every similar 1-on-1 conflict I have been in, if someone is mellow and kind, it ends up cool.

I disagree. First, I assume you are talking about Zim's conversation with dispatch. It wasn't a 911 call. He did what he was supposed to do as neighborhood watch captain (or whatever he was). He called a non-emergency line. During that call he expressed frustration about burglars and thugs who've frequented his neighborhood. Patient? He was very patient. He could have just ran after Martin and asked him what the fuck he was doing. That would have been totally justified. He didn't do that. He followed quietly then acted on advise that he didn't need to follow.

So on your Ghandi quote ... why are you starting anything on this case if "you don't know". If you don't know, then let it go.

No need for disputes about "not guilty" vs. "innocent".

Obama said it best when he said, "this is a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken." Downright Presidential. Sadly, he didn't leave it there.

Zim went into the situation frustrated and stereotyping, based on what he thought he saw - a thug.

You say he "followed quietly." Tape I heard seemed like he was getting increasingly irate following Mart, name-calling into the receiver and all.

If you want it to be all Mart's fault, all I have to say is Pffft. If you want it to be all Zim's fault, same goes.

Somebody light a match! True dat about Obama. He never should have said anything about this case. Of course the case was driven by politics and he is the chief politician, so ...

He did follow quietly. He even spoke to dispatch in hushed tones because he didn't know where Martin was and didn't want Martin to overhear his commentary. He never called out to Martin, he didn't jump him, he didn't pull out a gun and yell, "Freeze Nigger!"

It's not Zim's fault we live in a gun culture. He obtained his weapon legally and jumped through all the government hoops he had to to have the gun. People carry for protection. They wear their muscle suit because they are allowed to. Sometimes they actually use the gun. You don't get jumped by someone and just leave you gun in your pocket. It's there to get you out of the situation.

Now there may not have been a situation at all if guns were banned in Florida because Zim is the type of dude who would obey that law. So if there is fault, it's with the system.

Also, I think lots of gun toters are ready to brandish their weapons, but really haven't given much thought as to what happens when you kill someone. They simply are not ready to deal with all the fallout. You don't shoot someone, no matter what, and simply walk away. There will be an investigation. You WILL be scrutinized and probably at least sued.

So check this one out ... Seems to me Dooley shouldn't have been convicted either. The case is similar but people actually saw "the victim" (a white dude) attack the shooter after the shooter had turned to go home. Perhaps it's racism that the Jamaican was convicted in the same state under the same law ...
